Southern California Volleyball Club Review

!±8± Southern California Volleyball Club Review

At the Southern California Volleyball Club both boys and girls have the opportunity to participate in competitive volleyball play on a regional as well as a national level. The age groups are the standard 10 to 18 year ranges and for 2010 SCVC has for the Boys two 18s, one 17s, one 16s, 15s, 14s, 13, and 12 while for the girls there's one of each 18s, 17s, 16s, 15s, two 14s, one 13s, two 12s and one 9-10s.

What isn't standard at SCVC is the high level of competition at which the athletes play and the consistent production of well-trained teams that leave their mark at national junior tournaments year after year.

Although it's not a large club in comparison to other junior volleyball club programs in Southern Cal and around the country, SCVC has established itself as a virtual powerhouse to be reckoned with when it comes to winning medals or finishing on the championship stand at the Junior Olympics and/or Junior National Championships.

In 2002, the Boys 16s and 18s Open teams were bronze medalists at the Junior National Championships, in 2003 the girls 18s were gold medalists at the Junior Olympics while the Boys 16s Open won bronze and the Boys 17s Open were national champions at the Junior National Championships.

In 2004, the Boys 18s Open were national champions at Junior Nationals, while in '05 the Girls 18s National team won the bronze medal at JO's, Girls 14s won silver and Boys 17s Open were bronze medalists at Junior Nationals. In 2007, the Girls 15s finished with a bronze at JO's and the following year both the Boys 14s Open and Girls 18s Open were Junior Olympic bronze medalists. Last year, in '09 the Boys 16s Open were Junior Olympic bronze medalists while the Girls 13s Club claimed the gold medal.

With an eye on the long term possibilities for each athlete that enters their program, the SCVC philosophy centers on preparing their athletes for competition at the club, high school, collegiate, international and Olympic levels. Founded in the early 2000s by Bill Ferguson and Mary Boice, this nationally recognized junior program relies on an elite staff of coaches to teach the most modern, successful and proven volleyball tactics, techniques and team strategies.

Volleyball Training
SCVC members train at the Redondo Union High School gym or Aviation Gym in Redondo Beach, California.

For conditioning, Velocity Sports Performance offers training camps where SCVC volleyball players can learn performance enhancement and injury prevention techniques. Velocity also has specialized clinics which cover nutrition, jumping and landing, and court quickness, court speed, and agility. Both team training and/or private one-on-one sessions can be organized.

Physical Therapy is an option for SCVC athletes and is provided by Core Objectives with Lisa Heiden, a physical therapist who has worked with some of the top AVP Pro Beach and USA volleyball clients.

Volleyball Camps
In 2009, American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year, USC head volleyball coach and SCVC founder Bill Ferguson offered a boys summer volleyball camp while for 2010 the 2000 Olympic and USC head volleyball coach Mick Haley has several camps and clinics scheduled including a Tall Girls Defensive clinic (July 23), a Libero Clinic (July 23), an All Skills Camp (July 24-26) a Setter clinic (July 27) and a Hitter/Blocker clinic (July 27).
